Q: How can I display photographs on People Search using Active Directory?

Please follow the steps to display photographs in People Search using Active Directory.

Q: How do I set up People Search to return the results I would like?

To add extra data to the results that are returned you need to add extra AD attributes to People Search. Click here for how to Add Attributes below is a list of common attributes

Common AD Attributes

LDAP Attribute	Example
givenName	Firstname also called Christian name
SN	SN = Smith. This would be referred to as last name or surname.
name	name = Guy Thomas. Exactly the same as CN.
mail	Users email address
telephoneNumber	Office Phone
department	Staff Members Department
CN	Common Name, CN=Joe Smith. Actually, this LDAP attribute is made up from givenName joined to SN.
description	What you see in Active Directory Users and Computers. Not to be confused with displayName on the Users property sheet.
displayName	displayName = Joe Smith.
sAMAccountName	sAMAccountName = joes. Old NT 4.0 logon name, must be unique in the domain. Can be confused with CN.
userPrincipalName	userPrincipalName = joes@corp.com Often abbreviated to UPN, and looks like an email address.

Q: How can I restrict the results that are returned in the 'People Search' application?

This can be achieved in version 1.5 or later by changing the Distinguished Name Restriction config setting available in The Admin of the system.

Go to Administration > Utilities > Config Settings
You can either filter settings to locate the setting you would like to modify, or scroll through the list of categories to find the applicable setting

Code PS_DISTINGUISHED_NAME_RESTRICTION

Description restrict the results that are returned in the People Search application
If the Distinguished Name Restriction setting is not available you can add it to the Config Settings. To do this:

Click Add Setting and enter the following information:

Name Distinguished Name Restriction
Code PS_DISTINGUISHED_NAME_RESTRICTION
Type String
Value see notes below
Description Restrict the results that are returned in the People Search application
Category People Search
Click OK to save the new setting

Values

A value is then entered for this Config Setting to restrict the values returned from the LDAP connection. This value can be any attribute that exists in the Fully Qualified Name of an LDAP user entry.

Eg. CN=John, OU=people, DC=mydomain, DC=com, O=myorganization

Restricting the People Search application to a particular organizational unit

You can specify the value in the ‘Distinguished Name Restriction’ settingas OU=. By providing this restriction, People Search displays the users from the specified Organizational Unit or from those Organizational Units which belong to the specified Organizational Unit.

Eg. If you specify the value as OU=staff, People Search would display all the users from ‘staff’ as well as those organizational units which belong to ‘staff’
