A News Carousel allows you to display news articles through rotating visuals and interactive functionality allowing you to enhance the overall user experience and push underrated intranet pages into the spotlight.

The News Carousel Component can be used to embed an existing News category or selected articles within a category.

The advantages of using the News Carousel Component are:

Easily create and share News throughout the site
Simultaneously update all instances of the News category
Greater control and continuity in published News
Push underrated pages and articles into the spotlight

Note: Before beginning this process, ensure you have gone to the respective news category and selected the 'Featured' check box. This ensures the imagery display in the optimal resolution. Click here to read more abut how to do this.

Editing Content

Once the News Carousel Component has been added, select the existing News source by selecting a Category via the drop down list. The News Carousel Component is subsite specific - meaning it will only display categories and articles from the current subsite in which it is being used.

Once a Category has been selected, available News Articles will automatically populate in the News Article drop down.

The News Article drop-down list is populated with:

Most recent X articles (X is the number set from within the News Category )
News articles(maximum 50 from the latest to the oldest)

Selected article(s) are automatically populated into a list with an edit toolbar that allows you to reorder and edit the News Articles.

If the additional article(s) (either 'Most recent X articles' or single article) are added, a warning message is displayed. This warning popup appears whenever the list would be overwritten, which happens when either the current list or the new News contain most recent articles.

When the list is not empty and does not contain most recent articles, the message in purple will appear (as below).

If the number of articles listed is 10, you cannot add additional articles to the list. News Articles in the drop-down will be disabled, however, the option of selecting 'Most recent X articles' will be available where the list will be overwritten with the newly selected recent articles (and enabling the single News article items again if the number is still under 10). Alternatively, single News article items may also be enabled again when users delete an item in the list.

Override Carousel Image Links

To override carousel image links, select the News article and click on the edit button (pencil icon) to open up the Edit News Article popup. The Category Name can also be overwritten (for Caption Overlay Display Format).

To override, select the check box, and input their desired overriding link or texts.

RSS Category

When users select an RSS Category, the edit toolbar and New articles will not appear as it will automatically display the articles from the News Feed.

Note: The News Category in the iD Administration will need to be set to a Feature News Category for images to display in the correct dimensions.

Component Properties

Authorized users are given the ability to edit the properties of the News Component. By editing the properties the authorized user can adjust the available functionality and the look and feel of the component within the site.

The editing of the properties is divided into 3 tabs:

General Properties
Allows users to enable and disable general styling and formatting properties.
Component Properties
Allows users to enable and disable properties that are specific to the News Carousel Component, eg. display formats, Auto transitioning time.
Template Properties
These properties are set within the template and are not usually editable as they control the overall use of a component. For example, a component can be configured so that the component itself cannot be removed.

General
General properties are related to the general appearance of the component within its nominated location. Listed below are the properties available for modification.

Name
Default Value: None
The name of the component, used as the identifier for the component.

Border Color
Default Value: None
The border color sets the color of the border rendered around the component.

Border Style - NONE | DOTTED | DASHED | SOLID | DOUBLE |GROOVE | RIDGE | INSET | OUTSET
Default Value: None
The border style determines the style applied to the border applied around the component. A style of none indicates that a border will not be added.

Border Width
Default Value: 2px
The border width sets the border width around the component. A width of 0 indicates that a border will not be added.

Padding - LEFT | RIGHT | TOP | BOTTOM
Default Value: 0px
The padding property specifies the padding that will be placed around the component. Specific values can be applied to the left, right, top and bottom sections of the component's boundary.

Component
The Component properties are related to the specific component's visual appearance and functionality. Listed below are the properties available for modification.

Display Format - Basic | Thumbnails | Caption Overlay
Default Value: Basic
Determines the format used to display the component

Random Start - False | True
Default Value: false
Starts on a random item

No. of Auto-Transitioning items - 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | 10
Default Value: 10
Sets the number of auto-transitioning items. A value of 1 indicates that the component will be static

Auto-Transitioning Time
Default Value: 0
The time (in seconds) between transitions. If this is left blank, then the component will be static.

Custom Link Text
Default Value: None
Sets the text for the custom link

Custom Link URL
Default Value: None
Sets the URL for the custom link

The Template properties are set at the template level and cannot be edited elsewhere. Listed below are the properties within the template properties.

Allow Property Editing
Default Value: True
This property determines if the properties of the component can be modified from the default settings provided via the template.

Allow Inline Editing
Default Value: True
This property determines if the component's content can be modified from the default content provided via the template.

Allow Removal
Default Value: True
This property determines if the component can be removed from the current location.

Allow Repositioning
Default Value: True
This property determines if the component can be moved to its current position (drag and drop).

Allow Sharing
Default Value: True
This property determines if the component can be shared for other users to use within the site.
