Creating & Editing Templates

Templates form the basis for all layouts within the site - they dictate the underlying structure and rules for what can be added and where it is located.

This process is conducted through the Front End of iD and will depend on the level of Security applied.

Creating a Template

Navigate to the subsite for which you want to create a new subsite template for
Go to the Editing Toolbar at the top of the screen and select Manage Layout
Once you have selected Manage Layout and you're within the Layout Manager, additional options will become available. To add a new template, select the Add option and then New Subsite Template
The New Subsite Template wizard will be initiated

Step 1 - Details
Specify the name of the template as well as the description. The name and description fields should accurately reflect the purpose of the template.

Step 2 - Folders
The list of subsites that the user has "Full Control" access to will appear. Select the subsites you would like the new subsite template to be made available for

Step 3 - Finish
Review the options selected and either go Back and change any of the details selected, or proceed with the template creation by clicking the Finish button

Once the Finish button has been clicked you are directed to the Edit Template functionality where additional customization of the template takes place (see below)

Editing a Template

Navigate to the subsite for which you want to create a new subsite template for
Go to the Editing Toolbar at the top of the screen and select Manage Layout
Locate the Subsite Templates tab (as shown below); alternatively, when editing a layout a link to the template is provided on the Properties - General tab listing (as shown below)

Editing Toolbar

Each tab on the Editing Toolbar - Templates has a range of editing options for your new subsite template:

Properties
Version Control
Help

Structure

Provides the user with the ability to develop the structure for the new template.

Import
To create a template from an existing layout or template within the system, select the appropriate Import Layout or Import a Template option found within the Import section. This will initiate the import functionailty (as shown below)

Insert Six options are available when inserting rows and columns. These options insert the selected row, column or cell relative to the currently selected cell.

Collapsible cells are used to save space on a web page and are mainly used on smaller devices such as a mobile to display navigation. In general, the collapsible area normally only contains navigation, however with iD you can add any components to it that you wish. By using a collapsible left or right cell in the layout, you are giving the user the option to have a left or right navigation column that can be hidden when viewed on a mobile device.

Delete
To delete a row or column within the current template, select a cell within the item you wish to delete and then nominate the appropriate option as shown below. Note: any content contained within the row or column deleted will also be lost.

Merge
To merge a cell within the current template, select the cell you wish to merge across or down, and nominate the appropriate option (as shown below). Note: if the action is not possible, the option will be unavailable for selection.

Unmerge
To unmerge a cell within the current template, select the cell you wish to unmerge and nominate the appropriate option (as shown below). Note: only cells that have previously been merged will have the option to be unmerged.

Edit Current Cell
Each cell created within the template has several properties that can be modified to suit the cell requirements. These properties include the cell's Width, Alignment and Padding. To edit cell properties, simply select the cell and edit the current cell properties as required.

Setting the Main Content Area Once the structure has been established, you will notice a message in the top right corner to Mark the cells you wish to set as the Main Content Area.

It is essential to set the Main Content Area which is the area of the layout in which an application and it's data will display; the content changes within the set content area when clicking into another page within the same subsite. All content and information in areas not included in the main content area will remain static.

For example, you are currently on the home page of the intranet, click on a News article. You will notice that the top, left and right cells stay fixed - the content does not change - only the information in the center cells changes. This is because the center cells have been set as the main content area.

To set the main content area, select the cell and then tick the checkbox next to the following statement: "Allow cell content to change while navigating through the subsite". The highlighted cells will then show the set Main Content Area.

When setting the Main Content Area, you will need to ensure the combination of cells is rectangular in shape. The system will automatically highlight the cells to ensure the combination selected is rectangular. You will notice a message in the top right corner when additional cells have been highlighted to make up the main content area.

Components

The Component tab allows the user to add components to the template layout with predefined content, manage the available component properties and even create Custom Components.

Adding Components
To add components to the template, select the component you wish to add and drag it onto the template.

Manage Components
The Manage Components modal is used to control what components are listed on the Insert tab for the template (and initially on layouts created from the template). Simply check or uncheck the components you wish to be visible or hidden. Note: the Manage Components listing does not control if the component can be used or not on any template or layout. For that functionality, see Setting Allowed Components (below).

Custom Components
To create Custom Components to be used within the template or on pages, the Create Custom Components functionality can be used. Simply click on the button located at the top right of the page (as shown below). Click here for more information about Custom Components

Setting Allowed Components
To control what components are allowed to be used within layouts created from the template, the Setting Allowed Components functionality can be used. Simply click the button located at the top right of the screen (as shown below).

De-selecting a component within the Set Allowed Components functionality will:

remove the component from the Insert tab for both the current template and layouts created from the template, restricting users from using the component in the future;

remove any shared components from the Insert tab if they are the same type as the unselected component (e.g. image component)

not remove any components currently used on the template being edited

not remove any components from pre-existing pages that were created from the current template (however if said components are removed from the layout, they will no longer be able to be placed on the layout in future)

Properties Provides the user with the ability to edit the template title, description, active status, the category / subsites where the template can be used and Preview Thumbnail to upload a preview of the template.

Version Control Provides the user with version information that documents changes made to the template, as well as allowing the user to revert to a previous version if required.

Help Provides the user with information related to the current functionality via the external iD Help Site located at: http://help.intranetdashboard.com

Currently Editing This field allows you to select different devices depending on what subsite template you are currently building.

Desktop
This version will be shown when the site is accessed from high resolution desktop computers and laptops.

Phone
This version will be shown when the site is accessed from phones, such as iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Windows Phone, Blackberry, etc.

Tablet
This version can be accessed via tablet devices such as Apple iPads and Samsung tablets.

Saving the Template

Once changes have been made and are ready to be committed, select the Save option from the Editing Toolbar to save any changes. You will be prompted to enter a description of what changes were made.

The user is also provided with the ability to exit the editing process via the Exit option located at the top right side of the layout (as shown below). Upon selecting this option, the user can opt to save changes and exit or they can exit without saving (see below).
