Creating & Editing Templates

Templates form the basis for all pages within iD CMS - they dictate the underlying structure and rules for what can be added / edited on an iD CMS page

This process is conducted through the Front End of iD and will depend on the level of Security applied.

Creating a Template

Navigate to an existing folder that you wish to create a template for
Go to the Editing Toolbar at the top of the screen and select Add > New Template as shown below
The New Template wizard will be initiated

Step 1 - Details
Specify the name of the template as well as the description. The name and description fields should accurately reflect the purpose of the folder.

Step 2 - Folders
The list of folders that the user has "Full Control" access to will appear. Select the folders you would like the new template to be made available for.

Step 3 - Finish
Review the options selected and either go back and change any of the details selected or proceed with the template creation by clicking the Finish button.

Once the Finish button has been clicked you are directed to Edit Template functionality where additional customization of the template takes place.

Editing a Template

Navigate to a pre-existing folder that lists the template you wish to edit
Locate the iD CMS Templates tab and select the Title of the template within the list

OR

Use the Actions Bar located above the template list to Edit the template; alternatively, when editing a page a link to the template is provided on the Edit Properties pop up under Actions from the Editing Toolbar

Editing Toolbar

Each tab on the Editing Toolbar for Templates has a range of options for building and modifying templates:

Structure
Components
Properties
Version Control
Help
Currently Editing

StructureProvides the user with the ability to build the structure of the underlying layout of the page.

Import
To create a template from an existing page or template within the system, select the appropriate Import a Page or Import a Template option found within the Import section. This will initiate the import functionality.

Insert
Four options are available when inserting rows and columns into current templates. These options insert the selected row or column relative to the currently selected cell.

Delete

To delete a row or column within the structure of the current template, select a cell within the item you wish to delete and then nominate the appropriate option as shown below. Note: any content contained within the row or column deleted will also be lost.

Merge
To merge a cell within the structure of the current template, select the cell you wish to merge across or down and nominate the appropriate option as shown below. Note: if the action is not possible, the option will be unavailable for selection.

Unmerge
To unmerge a cell within the structure of the current template, select the cell you wish to unmerge and nominate the appropriate option as shown below. Note: only cells that have previously been merge will have the option to be unmerged.

Edit Current Cell
Each cell within the structure of the template has several properties that can be modified to suit the cell requirements. These properties include the cell's Width, Alignment, and Padding. To edit cell properties, simply select the cell and edit the current cell properties as required.

Components
The Components tab allows the user to add components to the template layout with predefined content. Manage the available component properties and even create Custom Components.

Adding Components
To add components to the template layout, select the component you wish to add and drag it onto the template

Components are divided into several categories based on the functionality they provide. These categories include Site Framework, Application, Media, Text and Shared components. Click here for more information on individual Components

Manage Components
The Manage Components options is used to control what components are listed on the Insert tab for the template (and initially on pages created from the template). Simply check or uncheck the components you wish to be visible or hidden.
Note: the Manage Components listing does not control if the component can be used or not on any template or pages. For that functionality, see Setting Allowed Components.

Custom Components
To create Custom Components to be used within the template or on pages, the Create Custom Components functionality can be used. Simply click on the button located at the top right of the page (as shown below). Click here for more information on Custom Components

Set Allowed Components
To control what components are allowed to be used within pages created from the template, the Set Allowed Components functionality can be used. Simply click the button located at the top right of the page (as shown below).

De-selecting a component within the Set Allowed Components functionality will:

remove the component from the Insert tab for both the current template and pages created from the template, restricting users from using the component in the future;
remove any shared components from the Insert tab if they are the same type as the unselected component (e.g. image component)
not remove any components currently used on the template being edited
not remove any components from pre-existing pages that were created from the current template (however if said components are removed from the page, they will no longer be able to be placed on the page in future)

Properties
Provides the user with the ability to Edit the template title, description, active status, the folders where the template can be used and preview thumbnail to upload a preview of the template.

Version Control
Provides the user with version information that documents changes made to the template, as well as allowing the user to revert to a previous version if required.

Help
Provides the user with information related to the current functionality via the external iD Help Site located at http://help.intranetdashboard.com

Currently Editing
This field allows you to select different devices depending on what iDCMS template you are currently building.

Desktop
This version will be shown when the site is accessed from high resolution desktop computers and laptops.

Phone
This version will be shown when the site is accessed from phones, such as iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Windows Phone, Blackberry, etc.

Tablet
This version can be accessed via tablet devices such as Apple iPads and Samsung tablets.

Saving the Template

Once changes have been made and are ready to be committed, select the Save option from the Editing Toolbar to save any changes. You will be prompted to enter a description of what changes were made.

You can also exit the editing process via the Exit option located at the top right side of the page (as shown below). Upon selecting this option, the user can opt to save changes and exit or they can exit without saving (see below).
